Youngstown Speed Cameras in School Zones Are Now Active
Youngstown is making strides to improve pedestrian safety, especially for its young ones. Speed cameras have been put up around 11 Youngstown school zones to help prevent speeding. The equipment will determine your speed, take pictures of your vehicle and license plate, and send tickets for speeding violations.
While more cameras are coming, the 11 current cameras are at these locations:
- Chaney High School — S. Hazelwood Avenue
- East High School — Bennington Avenue
- East High School — E. High Avenue
- Kirkmere Elementary School — Kirk Road
- Rayen Early College Middle School — Williamson Avenue
- Saint Christine — S. Schenley Avenue
- Stambaugh Charter Academy — S. Hazelwood Avenue
- Valley Christian — Southern Boulevard
- Volney Rogers Elementary School — S. Schenley Avenue
- Woodrow Wilson Alternative School — Gibson Street
- Woodrow Wilson Alternative School — E. Indianola Avenue
After a 30-day grace period ending on February 17, speeding violations can result in fines from $100 to $150.
Do Speed Cameras Really Improve Safety?
On just the first day they were installed, the 11 solar-powered cameras caught 1,218 drivers speeding. But do they really help decrease pedestrian accidents near Youngstown?
Youngstown Det. Sgt. Jose Morales says, “We discovered that there was an excessive number of speeding vehicles in our school zones. Speeding vehicles for the purpose of this study were considered to be any vehicle speeding in excess of 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), several studies support that speed cameras help reduce drivers’ speed and crashes caused by speeding. Especially with cameras like the ones in Youngstown that hold speeders accountable, drivers tend to be more hesitant to speed. However, they aren’t a foolproof method to prevent all pedestrian accidents.
What to Do If Your Child Was Injured Near a School Crosswalk
You hope that your child is safe while on school property. But school crosswalks can be dangerous, especially during busy drop-off and pick-up times. If your child is injured at a Youngstown school crosswalk, you should take the following steps:
- Get medical help immediately — You don’t want to take any risks with your child’s safety. You should see a doctor as soon as possible after the accident, even if the injuries seem minor. Not all injuries will be obvious right away, and they can quickly become serious.
- Get contact information — You should get contact information from the at-fault driver and any witnesses. Eyewitnesses may have seen the driver speeding or driving recklessly in a school zone.
- Document your child’s injuries — Hang onto your child’s medical records and any documentation of your family’s losses. This includes medical bills and time you missed at work to care for your child.
- Contact an attorney — You should be focused on your child’s recovery, not dealing with insurance companies and pursuing compensation. A Youngstown pedestrian accident attorney can seek the money you need to help your family recover.
